Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, ABPP, is codirector of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy; assistant clinical professor at the University of California, Berkeley; and a diplomate and founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Tompkins specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders in adults, adolescents, and children. He is author or coauthor of numerous articles on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and related topics, as well as seven books, including three books published by New Harbinger Publications: Digging Out, OCD: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed, and Anxiety and Avoidance. Tompkins serves on the advisory board of Magination Press, the children’s press of the American Psychological Association. He is a certified supervisor and trainer for the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy and the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. As usual, Michael Tompkins has come out with another book that is accessible, useful, warm and clear. He has an uncanny knack of communicating how expert he is in an area while speaking clearly to his audience. He and Jonathan Barkin do a great job in this book of carrying on this tradition. The authors do a terrific job of differentiating between constructive worry and problematic worry and provide step-by-step instructions as to how tell the difference and how to use the power of constructive worry to reduce unhelpful worry. Thank you for another great contribution!

Drs. Tompkins and Barkin have nicely filled a void for teens trying to cope with stress and anxiety with this easy-to-use, well-organized, evidence-based thorough workbook on that provides clear, step-by-step exercises. It certainly could be a resource for a teen wanting to tackle these issues alone but well might be even more effective as a companion activity with a therapist. It also nicely augments Dr. Tompkin's earlier book, My Anxious Mind.

I bought this book for my grandnieces (ages 13 and 15) - but only got one to see if they would find it useful. I gave it to them yesterday and after perusing it, they debated who would get it first. They saw the content and discussed it over dinner and I knew I needed to order a second one. They resonated with the workbook structure so they could apply the content individually.I believe that any opportunity they have to discuss stressors and do it on their own (via the workbook) and/or discuss with a trusted person, the better their ability to identify and manage issues will be. Knowing they feel stress and being able to articulate the causes and remedies, are not always in concert. This workbook will will give me an opportunity to discuss the relevant issues with the girls and be valuable to the entire family. I look forward to those dialogs. Thank you!

Drs Thompkins and Barkin thread the needle between being informative in a manner both older and younger teens will find engaging while. The exercises are also appropriate for the range of younger to older teens. Practical and very helpful for any teen to become familiar with the very human condition or distress or anxious tension. In a teen's world there are countless invitations to freeze, avoid or feel flustered, be it managing test taking to social interactions to new experiences of independence. As a Pyte he is a mix between vampire and human and despite efforts over the years to kill him, he can't die. When he meets Madison, he is immediately attracted and knows he needs to stay away from her. However, he can't he wants Madison but could she accept him for who he is and with danger lurking he feels the need to protect what he is beginning to think of as his family.I liked this one but thought at times it was a bit angsty. Madison is an interesting character but at times I think she was a bit immature when it came to Ephraim. I liked Ephraim a lot, he is a big alpha male who questions himself initially with Madison but once he makes a decision he is a force to be reckoned with. Great read.

I love RL Mathewson books. The neighbors from hell series is one of my favorites. This story was good and I liked the characters but for the love of Pete, did anyone read this book before publishing? The typos were horrible, numerous and down right distracting. It became so annoying that I was losing my love for the story. It's a story of a vampire falling for a human. It's a good story and I really liked it but whoever was paid to edit this book, should refund the money.

I always enjoy stories by R. L. Mathewson. The storyline is cohesive, the characters are always likable, and she writes great banter. This one is no exception. This is the first PNR that I’ve ever read from Mathewson, and it was fantastic. The banter and dialogue alone make it worth reading. The characters are just so likable and funny, but with legit heat and some seriously steamy scenes. It’s the perfect smexy escape read. But, buyer beware: if you are the type of person that cannot read a story with grammatical error’s, and typos, this might not be the book for you. It’s riddled with typos, mistakes, and grammatical errors, but for some reason it doesn’t bother me too much. I guess it’s because I know going in that finding several errors is a high probability. Who knows? Still, I definitely recommend this for a fun, easy, and smexy good time.

The story itself is worth two stars... but everything else was atrocious. So many missing words, typos, punctuation errors etc. I can overlook mistakes here and there, but there is no way any editing was done to this book. It was awful. The last two things that annoyed me (and this might just be a 'me' thing) was that in the middle of a paragraph it changes to a different person's perspective. One minute I was in Madison's head and the next I was Ephraim or some other character. It completely takes me out of the moment. And finally, it was too long. I skimmed the last 15% or so. I will not be reading the rest of the series. I see editing doesn't get any better so it's just not worth it. If the author expects readers to pay for their work, then said author needs to be willing to put in the time and effort to make it readable.

I managed to pick this one up awhile back when it was a freebie and it languished in my TBR for quite some time. I finally dug it out and when I realized it was a bit longer read (over 6700 Kindle locations) I 'gave myself permission' to quit if I didn't like it. Well, I finished it.The book definitely has some flaws that would have likely been improved by a tighter editing, however at the heart of it were two very interesting people who sucked me deeply into the story in the first chapters. There was a bit of 'and the kitchen sink' thrown in in terms of plot points, but I did chalk some of that up to the world building as there is at least one sequel. However, as the story progressed it did lose a little of the tightness at the beginning. Given some rather abrupt seeming jumps in time and perspective it almost felt like perhaps this had started off as a series of novellas that were then melded into a full book.Other reviewers have noted, and I would reiterate, that some of the word choices, grammar/punctuation/capitalization errors were a bit much. In general I can overlook a few, but there were just enough to pull me out of the story at times. Particularly bothersome to me is the occasional (I think twice at least) lack of capitalizations--my grammar skills are far from a mastery level so if something looks odd perhaps it's my own ignorance, however...the capitalization errors do bug me ('states' when it's really States, as in 'returned to the States from overseas'). Not earth-shattering, but indeed something to notice. For those who are more grammatically inclined these might be deal breakers.The thing that bugged me the most however is that I have a new author to add to my 'needs to check an anatomy textbook' list with regards to the hymen. It's just not all that far inside...yes there are anatomical differences, but still. Let's just say the hymen in this story had a bit more of a starring role so I wish the description of activities did not imply that the darn thing is that far inside. If you're in, you're in...this in-but-only-an-inch-so-it-doesn't-count thing is annoying. As for the uber-thick version our heroine is blessed with, honestly I felt as though we were reading about a septum not a hymen.At this point my rating is a bit difficult. The story started off as a clear 5 even for me, but the point of view changes, the jumps in time, grammar issues, and that darn hymen, started pulling it down for me. Ultimately there is some really good story present and on the assumption the author will improve (or perhaps get better editing) I am very interested in seeing how this world unfolds--I bought the sequel when I was about a third done. I'm forgiving the excessive plot elements as many first books do a bit of that in their world building--not that it has to be done that way, but I can forgive that one if the next books show it was worthwhile. Given the promise shown I think this could end up as quite a fine series.I am looking forward to the next story and I do recommend giving this one a try!JTG

I have to start by saying that I've really liked most of Mathewson's books. But her characters can be pretty outrageous, verging on obnoxious. In this book, I didn't really like either of the main characters. Madison was irritating. Ephraim made some stupid, nonsensical choices. And Candy was just terrible. A villain is important to a story, but all the child abuse was too much.Also, the editing was BAD. This book desperately needed punctuation, and it was distracting. :(

I purchased this book because it was my daughter’s favorite library book. She loves learning about the different insects in the story as well as the chirping cricket sound at the end. I knew I was taking a gamble buying the book used, but it arrived in perfect condition with only one not-surprising defect- the chirping sound didn’t work. I figured I could replace the batteries, but the plate with the batteries and chip was concealed inside the back cover instead of screwed onto the back like ordinary books that make sounds. I decided to cut the back cover open to replace the batteries, but the batteries, which were simple watch batteries that you know wouldn’t last a lifetime, we’re hotglued onto the plate so there was no way I could replace them! Now, I know that’s what I get for buying used, but I’ve read tons of reviews here that even the new books don’t work. A simple design change of making the batteries replaceable is all that’s needed and I’d be willing to pay a few more bucks if this happened. Now we are stuck with a disappointing book instead .

Now I know why this was only available in hard bound. At the last page, the cricket will actually sing for you. My nephews and I whispered the words, after it had been read a few times. He would tell me to whisper and be quiet like the cricket. Of course, Mr. Carle is a wonderful illustrator.

I always loved this book growing up and now my son loves it too. It's sweet to share a special memory with him from when I was young. The only issue I have is that the sound on the last page does not sound like a cricket to me. But that isn't really an issue to a one year old.

the chip in this book that is supposed to give the sound of a cricket chirping is defective in the book. I returned one and got a second that is also bad. I kept the second one even though it is bad because if you listen really carefully you can hear the chirp in the volume of a very quiet whisper. This book made a revised edition with a more sturdy chip years ago and I wanted that one. The version I got was the really old version. This book is about 20 years old and thus the chip is of poor quality. I would not buy it from amazon but recommend getting it at a book store or some brick & mortar place where you can check out the chip before purchase.

I love this book and have purchased many in the past as gifts. The first book that I received for this order did not chirp when I opened the back cover. I requested a replacement, which arrived within a few days. Sadly, the replacement book had the same problem. I suspect the batteries are dead in both books. I am very disappointed to have to return for a refund.

Be careful of used purchases for battery books. Mine arrived with the battery and strip ripped out. So, no chirping which I figured might happen used even in good condition, but with the last to pages having tears from the battery I was displeased with. Other than that Eric Carle's series of books are great for kids.

Like the book but would love it if it worked. The book is suppose to make a chirping sound on the last page and the first book shipped did not work. I guessed it might be the batteries but they are expensive (about $5 each and it takes 2) so i sent it back. The return process was easy and I received a second book but it did not work either. Since I wanted to give it for a Christmas present and figured the next one probably wouldn't work either I just replaced the batteries. I'd have been better off to have gone to the local bookstore.

My daughter loves this story, the book is perfect BUT the mechanism of the crickets’ chant ( which only activates once you reach the last page) got damaged too soon causing the book to “chirp” non stop every time you TOUCH it!

I liked that Erica stuck to her integrity, not giving in to temptation. I didn't like the fact that Erica was in an obusive relationship, and couldn't get help.
