Review

"This one is a triumph and a joy -- no showy-made for TV-ness -- just the reality of the way crimes and those who do them should be taken to account. This one is the real thing."--Courier Gazette, Rockland, Maine"The tale is brimming with insights about police procedure, jurisdictional disputes, and politics. Over and over again, real life trumps fiction. For instance, after a five-hour standoff, the suspect surrenders one of his guns for a soda, the other for a cigarette. Put that in a novel and no one would believe it . . . The reader is never allowed to lose sight of the humanity of the victim, a young girl who accepted a ride from the wrong guy, then had the temerity to say no and mean it."--Boston Globe"Few true crime books get behind the scenes and explain how homicide detectives do their jobs the way Finding Amy does."--Bangor Daily News"This is one of the best true crime stories to be published in recent years...This book should reaffirm the public's faith in the police, prosecutors, and Maine's judicial system."--Brunswick Times Record"Loughlin's recorded entries about the case -- his thoughts, emotions and reactions to the investigation -- amplify Flora's straightforward but potent narrative as detectives search for the grave, find it (about halfway through the book) and build a case against a leading suspect. This is a feast for proceduralists, giving countless small details of the work-a-day slogging involved, an effort that leads the department to make good on the mystery, catching Amy's murderer, and making the case stick."--Publishers Weekly"Readers of true crime will find this chronological tale of the search for Amy and her killer especially compelling because of the personal account of Loughlin, who was lieutenant of the Criminal Investigation Department when Amy disappeared. Loughlin's journal, woven into Flora's painstaking recreation of the work of the detectives, highlights the intense discussions that took place among the key players and gives readers a look at the slow, steady progress of real detectives on a real case. There are no 'CSI solutions' that wrap up the case in a conveniently short time. There are no magic findings of DNA. What takes place in this true story is the passionate belief that they will find Amy, bring her killer to justice, and give closure to her family and to the people of Maine." --Foreword

This is an incredible book to read. I first became captivated with the story of Amy St. Laurent when I was watching a TV series called "Murder Next Door". After recently viewing this particular episode again (about Amy's disappearance) I decided to do a search on her story and found this book. I don't normally read books about True Crime but I'm very glad I made this purchase. If you are interested in True Crime and the steps law enforcement takes to bring a killer to justice this book is for you. Very gripping account of a young woman's disappearance and told in such detail that it will make you keep on reading. The detailed account of when Amy was discovered (autopsy and officers personal accounts of what they saw) was something that left a lasting impression on me that won't go away. A great effort by 2 authors who bring you a true story like not many can. Its hard to imagine what it must have been like living in Portland, Maine when this all unfolded. Highly recommended reading.

This was a good true crime story which focused mostly upon the task of finding the victim's body in order to be able to charge the suspect. The police knew almost from the beginning who had murdered Amy St. Laurent; they just had to come up with enough for the suspect to be charged. Their biggest problem was not having her body and the potential evidence it might produce.I have worked in a Maine D.A.'s office and other forms of law enforcement, and my husband was a homicide detective for years in another state. I have a special perspective when reading true crime, especially when it comes to Maine. The interagency cooperation in this case was almost unheard of and was ultimately what lead to its great success. But they never would have found Amy's body if those hillbillies, the game wardens, hadn't offered their assistance. I know all those guys, and they are the best law enforcement agency in the state of Maine. It was truly amazing that they were able to find her the first day of the search.Deputy Chief Loughlin's journal added a great deal to the book. But I have to say that the image that he gave of Portland and the crime there was greatly inflated. He made himself a little too self important. Portland is after all quite a small city even though it does experience its share of homicides and other violent crimes.

Living through this from all sides is so tragic. It really delves into the pain staking process of what happens when such a beautiful person has been murdered. It also explains what steps and procedures take place. I fully believe that so many prayers were answered on many levels. I highly recommend this read for adults who wonder what happens from the moment of disappearance to discovery to convection. Amazing authors!

Very good book, could barely put it down even though you learn who the killer is fairly early on and can kind of guess at the outcome. I'd have given it 5 stars, but that's kind of the Brother Karamazov, Gone With the Wind category. For its genre, though, very well done and very exciting. Other than all the swearing it made me have more sympathy and empathy for the police than I think I'd ever had. The story of the search for her body (it had been an ongoing search, but there was one main day in particular where it was a massive effort) was especially compelling, as well as the day by day grind of the investigation and the toll it took on the victim's family and the detectives.Since I'm not from Maine (in fact I'm geographically nearer to the killer's home) I probably missed some of the provincial observations, but I liked the setting nonetheless. I also liked that the tragedy was captured using more of the horror and emotional pain of the family and less of the gore of the murder itself. I suppose both methods encourage voyeurism, but this generated a dividend of genuine empathy with the family for their loss. Amy's father, though rare in appearance, was all the more powerful as the despair, sadness, and most of all lost helplessness of the anguish of so senselessly losing a daughter washes over the reader. It is difficult to write a review of such an intimate story, as I'm sure it was difficult to write such a book. I'm also sure it was difficult to avoid sensationalizing the story, but this book stays far behind that line. I can recommend it with few if any reservations.

It's the best. Or one of the best books I have ever read. I read a lot. And a ton of true crime. It moves along quickly. You do not get bogged down at any point in the story. It's just beautiful and amazing. And of course very sad. I am sad for Amy. Her family. But also for all of the men and women involved in bringing her killer to justice. The book is raw at times. Yet always real. That's important. Just a great book. And it does certainly have a strange twist in it regarding the Main Wardens. Don't think any longer. Please buy the book. You will not regret it.

I purchased this book after reading Flora's Joe Burgess series because I was impressed with the writing talent. This book slipped into a completely different gear. It took a little while to get "into" the story, but once immersed, the whole book was incredibly adept at demonstrating a number of factors: 1) the screwed-up nature of the criminal mind, 2) the depth of loss a victims family endures, 3) the quirkiness of our justice system, 4) the dedication of many in law enforcement to unravel the truth associated with crimes, and 5) that essentially we just keep going deeper in the hole as a society. This book should be read and the content digested as the buzz-words of today call "lessons learned".

Sad but true story! Well written . Author has definitely lived through so many sorrowful real life stories.
