About the Author
Author of several highly acclaimed books, including others in the celebrated Deep-Sky Companions series, Stephen James O'Meara is well known among the astronomical community for his engaging and informative writing style and for his remarkable skills as a visual observer. O'Meara spent much of his early career on the editorial staff of Sky and Telescope before joining Astronomy magazine as its Secret Sky columnist and a contributing editor. An award-winning visual observer, he was the first person to sight Halley's Comet on its return in 1985 and the first to determine visually the rotation period of Uranus. One of his most distinguished feats was the visual detection of the mysterious spokes in Saturn's B-ring before spacecraft imaged them. Among his achievements, O'Meara has received the prestigious Lone Stargazer Award, the Omega Centauri Award and the Caroline Herschel Award. Asteroid 3637 was named O'Meara in his honor by the International Astronomical Union. In his spare time, he travels the world to document volcanic eruptions. He is a contract videographer for National Geographic Digital Motion and a contract photographer for the National Geographic Image Collection.

An excellent resource, with vivid descriptions of the Messier objects, as well as useful finder charts. O'Meara's writing style is a joy, and his sketches of the objects are charming. The book is a treasure trove of useful information. I wish I could deduct half a star though, for one noticeable flaw in this product. This is the Second Edition. The First Edition presumably included a complete star chart showing all the Messier objects dispersed among the various constellations, with said chart at the back of the book. The Second Edition repeatedly tells the reader to first locate an object "at the star chart in the back of the book", then use the detailed finder chart for the particular object (one chart provided per object, under the entry for the object), in order to hone in on it. However, there is no star chart at the back of the book in the Second Edition - only the detailed finder charts as given in the entry for each object! Not a fatal flaw, but a serious and annoying one. The book contains much useful history and information, and is certainly worth any stargazer's time and money, however. Almost perfect, except for the flaw described. Still, highly recommended.
I feel bad giving this a poor review since the actually text and information in the book is great. It's an astronomy classic. There really ought to be separate star ratings for the writer and the publisher/Kindle presentation. But the Kindle version of this book, the most expensive eBook I have ever purchased, is absolutely awful for a number of reasons:1. It is incomplete. There are repeated references to the star charts at the back, but there are no star charts. They are key to the book! Hello? You can't charge this much and then leave out one of the essential features - the map of the objects! I had to find one on the web - for free - and then switch back and forth between my web browser and Kindle. Totally unacceptable.2. The navigation just absolutely sucks. There are 110 Messier objects catalogued in the book. Many reference each other - for example, M110 is in orbit around M31 and it's right next to it in the sky. But there is no way to easily flip between the two. There are no chapter stops - the part of the book that is the object catalogue in just one bit fat Kindle chapter, despite it being 80% of the book. Every time you want to find specific objects (like, I don't know, the ones in the sky tonight), you have to flip flip flip endlessly through the hundreds of pages, which themselves are not even marked as to which object they describe. So you guess: Hmm, I think M45 is around halfway. So you get a random page in the middle of a six page description of ???. You then flip, flip, flip, to the beginning of the "chapter" and discover, oh no, this is M58. So you try to go back a ways, flip flip flip, and discover no, now we're in M39. Gotta go forward. Utterly maddening for a reference book. And searching doesn't help much, since each M object is referenced in dozens of locations around the book.3. The price is outrageous. The original is a hardbound book, a serious reference tome. So ok, it's $48. But if you are going to charge me $28 for the electronic version of this - the price of THREE normal Kindle books - the message is that this is a special eBook, filled with charts and photography. Instead you get a poorly laid out, impossible to navigate joke, with missing charts and graphics, bad scans of the photos, and text filled with typos. I get that for this type of book, Kindle may have its limitations, but then why charge $28? If there are some problems with the e-version, but I paid $9.99 for a $48 book and got the author's (excellent) text and the mini-charts, then OK. But $28 for a book with no printing or shipping costs, that no one even bothered to edit? What a rip-off. I would love to hear the explanation of why this high price is justified when they couldn't even edit the electronic version, or sen make sure the whole book was in there.Mr. O'Meara is wonderful and I learned a lot by reading the book. The only thing I can say about Amazon ripping me off like this is that maybe he got a big fat royalty, which he deserves. I feel bad about throwing a one star rating into his mix because his book doesn't deserve it.But the product I bought is a joke. If this is the future of publishing, I would suggest that authors that write anything but NYT bestsellers should go find another profession. It's so sad.
This book is disappointing on a number of levels. For such an expensive book I expected better quality binding. This book has a glued spine rather than sewn. It has been my experience that after a fairly short number of years, glued spines begin degrading and eveutaully fail leaving your expensive book in pieces.Another problem is the thin and almost translucent pages. The paper is so thin you can see the type and pictures from the other side of the page bleeding through to the page you are trying to read. It is distracting.I started reading the book and was discouraged to find numerous references in chpater two to "the star chart inside the back cover of the book". There are no charts at the back of the book. Apparently while preparing the second edition they failed to proofread and revise the original content. This is admittedly a small thing, but it makes you suspect the thoroughness that went into the rest of the book. Attention to detail is clealrly lacking.Overall this book comes across as overpriced for what you receive. If it was a $20 or $25 book I coould overlook the flaws. At $48 these flaws are not acceptable. Quite disappointing since the first version received universally positive reviews. Perhaps I should have tracked down the original version rather than waiting for the release of the second edition.
I am a very active amateur astronomer with 5" and 8" SCTs and access to a 10" Dob. Even though the Messier Catalog is just a small subset of the objects I observe, O'Meara is an engaging writer and I have reread all four of his books that I have many times. As a result, I wore out my first edition of this book to the point that the binding broke so I bought the second edition last year. The second edition corrects most of the errors in the first edition, although a couple slipped through.
I use this book for reference when out looking at deep space objects such as the Messier 110. It is well written and has great photos and diagrams. I would recommend this predominantly for those individuals just starting out in astronomy who want to learn about, and participate in, one of the most fun things around, a Messier Marathon.
This is the indispensable guide to the Messier Objects. I had to order this second edition because our first edition completely fell apart due to an exceptionally poor glued binding. I'm hoping that this one lasts longer, as the information in it is invaluable to our students.
Great description but missing maps referred to by author "in the back of the book". An expensive book that was supposed to be new... not sure who is responsible.
Useful reference. I plan to buy more in this set. Could be improved with sky maps.
