Review
"Living with Intensity provides something for everyone who lives or works with gifted children and adults. With chapters devoted to clinical work with the gifted, family dynamics, issues affecting specifically adults who are gifted, and research studies and applications, Daniels and Piechowski have provided a noteworthy and even essential contribution to the field of giftedness." --Dr. Susan Berry, Psychologist who works with gifted children and their families, Glastonbury, CT
A detailed and insightful perspective on intensity throughout the lifespan. The section on adolescence should be compulsory reading for parents, teachers and counselors. --Miraca U.M. Gross, Professor, Director: Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC), The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia
A valuable resource for anyone working or living with a person who is gifted. Dabrowski's concepts of overexcitabilities and positive disintegration are helpful in understanding what might otherwise seem like inexplicable behaviors among some gifted children and adults. Living with Intensity, an apt title, provides practical insights to guide educators, psychologists, and parents. --Steven I. Pfeiffer, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor and Director of Clinical Training, The Florida State University Living with Intensity is a can't put it down exploration of the multi-faceted sensitivities/intensities of gifted children and adults, which fuel their personal growth--if they are NOT misunderstood. It will assist all parents, teachers, and clinicians to understand and nurture the complex combination of intellectual advancement and overexcitabilities gifted individuals present, and avoid tragic misperceptions and misdiagnoses. --Barbara Jackson Gilman, M.S., Associate Director of the Gifted Development Center, Denver, CO"The application of Dabrowski becomes clear for counselors, teachers, and parents. Nice examples of working with (not against, or trying to fix) intensity. This book is an ideal companion to Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration (2008)." --Leslie Forstadt, Ph.D., in Roeper Review"Living with Intensity is both a pleasant and instructive reading. It undoubtedly succeeds in its declared aim of making 'highly complex material accessible without diluting its essential concepts' (p.265). Using a language that is easy to follow and being filled with illustrations and practical suggestions, this book is essential for all parents, teachers and counselors 'dealing' with giftedness and intensity. The message it advocates, that of listening to gifted children and adults, respecting and understanding them, is an imperative in today's world both scarred by a series of misconceptions about the creative self and in desperate need of creativity." --Vlad Glaveanu, Editor, Europe's Journal of Psychology

As a child, I was tested as having an IQ in the profoundly gifted range. I have never felt particularly smart, though - and at some level, I was convinced that my parents just didn't understand the test results. From my perspective, I don't feel that I learn and understand more easily than others. I have always felt like I was just more motivated than other people... I work harder and I care more about the things I do. As a result, I have accomplished a lot of things in my life and have done well in sports, etc. Considering how I look on the outside, you would think that I feel fine on the inside. But, actually...In recent years, I have developed extreme social anxiety... No matter what I say or do, it always seems wrong. Every time I talk to a stranger, I later repeat the conversation in my head, thinking of all the things I said that were embarrassing, or lamenting that I talked too much or that I took the situation too seriously. I feel so ashamed that I vow never to talk to anyone ever again, but eventually I do and the cycle repeats. Now this book... I originally bought this book as a parenting resource, but instead, I cried reading the first two chapters as I remembered every time in my life that people have told me that I am too sensitive, I talk too much, I talk too fast... No matter what I do, I am just TOO MUCH. When I confide in loved ones about the way I feel, they tell me that I should see a psychologist... I agree with them. I do need help... but who would I go to? How would I explain what is wrong with me? How would they even begin to help me? I've spent a great deal of time researching these questions... and finally, this book gave me the answers. If any of these experiences resonate with you, please please please read this book.
You might purchase this book, as I did, in an attempt to both better parent your intense, gifted child and to help provide him a framework to understand himself. Don't be surprised, however, if you come away after reading it with an entirely new lens for understanding your own childhood experiences. In my case, it turns out, the intense little apple does not fall far from the intense little tree and this book changed my whole way of looking at my past, present, and future self.
This book is pretty cool if you and/or loved ones, family and friends are very bright and/or creative but at some point someone felt that someone was being very emotional - whether just having a surprisingly strong emotional reaction to something or seeming like an intense and sensitive person. I had no idea that this quality is normal in people who are exceptionally bright and creative and is not "just crazy women". It can provide some insight and context to those who didn't know.
I am only 1/3 of the way through this book, and I'm totally, completely moved by it's overall message. As someone who bought this book to help understand myself, this is by far the one that describes my intense experiences exactly, and I've read a LOT. This information is very helpful for parents, clinicians, and especially those who would describe themselves as "intense". I have come to another whole level of acceptance with myself as a result of reading this book. I actually went to sleep hugging this book to my heart a few nights ago. Thank you, Susan Daniels, and others who helped in this heartfelt endeavor, for skillfully and lovingly conveying this unique, important, and profoundly misunderstood description of the human experience. I highly recommend this book those who would describe themselves in this manner. Please, write more, Ms.Daniels. I will be your biggest supporter. With Love, Lisa
Great book to get into the topic without prior medical/psychological knowledge. A bit lengthy and scholar at times (written by a PhD...), but palatable for the non-initiated. Lots of substance and a very moderate level of "stories" to illustrate the take aways.Definitely and "intense" book.
My son has marked up this book completely. He says that it explains to him why he was always so concerned about war photos on TV as child and so much more. It has helped him better understand his intense feelings an concerns and to channel them into constructive choices as an adult. He says it is the best book ever for a gifted child!
It is helpful in trying to understand the hyper intelligent. I would recommend this as reading for any educator working with gifted or highly intelligent children.
I ordered 4 books to become informed on the intensity of gifted children. Their intensity mirrors ADHD and it is very easy to lose patience with them. I underlined and stared pages I wanted his mother to read. She was a gifted child herself and can identify with his emotions. She felt and delt with them inside while he projects whatever he is feeling on the outside. All four of the books I ordered, Raising a Gifted Child, Parenting a gifted child and this book could have been written for my grandson. It helped me deal with my feelings of frustration when dealing with him.
