Brennan Manning's "All is Grace" is his experiential memoir of his life. Not a dry, historical biography of facts, dates, and places. Instead, this book is a collection of his experiences, dreams and emotions that made up the rugged coastline of his life.Christians who are familiar with The Ragamuffin Gospel will find more detail here of Manning's battles with alcohol, psychological wounds, and failures. His journey from son, to priest, to husband and step-father, to divorce, to fame, and to impaired old age are all recounted with great emotion and vivid recollection. There are pictures of his journey through life, and the important people along the way. This is a short book filled with memories, encounters and favorite quotes. It added much to my understanding of Manning's theology and his body of writing.
I have tried reading his other books and frankly felt a bit bored with the many words he used and excessive usage of quotes and stories. Reading his other books, I felt that I was not getting the full story, just hints and glimpses into the struggles he had with living in the Father's love and grace. As such, I felt that there was something genuine missing from his other writings. It just did not feel that authentic to me.In this book, I was riveted with his honest, vulnerable account of a deeply flawed man struggling with destructive tendencies who ultimately keeps returning to God despite his rather sensational falls. His life story actually supports the revelational truth that he staked his ministry on: "God loves you as you are and not as you should be since none of us are as we should be." Very powerful testimony of one's man journey to find God in the midst of personal train wrecks.
A magnificent accounting of God's incredible grace perpetuating Manning's theme that God did not come to make bad men, good; but He came to make dead men alive! This is absolutely critical for the Christian, and really, the whole world to fathom. Though Brennan Manning's viewpoint is spot on when it comes to the grace of God covering and swallowing up even, the entire depravity of our human nature, he had not been able to distinguish necessarily the human nature or sinful nature from the real us, in Christ.Forgiving that, this is a book that will leave you weeping with joy at just how much God loves you no matter what you have done, or more importantly, what you continue to do.
When I found this book on my Kindle reader the other evening, I was attracted by both the title and the fact that the author was a peer of mine in age. As I read, it became clear that Brennan's story was not terribly different from mine. We both are sinners, having broken every one of God's commandments in the heart if not in deed. This book is for any person who knows he needs God's Grace in his life, and also realizes that Grace has been there all along. It will increase your faith and give you reason to keep on keeping on. I believe it will be as meaningful to you as it has been to me!
If you are a fan of Brennan's grace-filled writings then this is a must read. My only complaint is that I wish it had been twice as long so as to include more details about this wonderful man's life. I reckon the assumption is that anyone interested in reading his memoirs has already benefitted from spiritually gorging on at least one of his uplifting books in which he relates many of his own ups and downs as a child of God. As it is he conveys (in his customary unabashedly honest and direct manner) the incredible mercy, forgiveness and acceptance that, as he experienced repeatedly, all human beings can know and take immense comfort in. If you haven't read any of his other works I can only ask "What for heaven's sake are you waiting for?" He is a treasure.
Jacob wrestled, Jacob was changed, and God was revealed. We see the same in the life of Brennan Manning - wrestling, changing , and Gods grace revealed. Intimacy may not develop the way we expect, but we cannot argue the transformation of the heart regardless of the battle with the flesh. God is revealed. Joy even in our pain because the presence of God is with us in Jesus - through His Spirit and the body of Christ. Even in our failing we stand justified in Jesus Christ. All is grace; He is our righteousness and our life. There is hope seen in messy lives and our hope has a name: Jesus. We see Jesus lifted high as our hope in this book. ~ Paul Widmark
Brennan Manning was a former priest turned non-denominational Christian speaker and writer. He was also a seeker of truth, a lover of his fellow man, a husband (for a while), a monk (for a while), a raging alcoholic, and above all, a man after God's own heart, so desperately in need of the endless grace he always found. He was famous for his books and lectures extolling God's boundless love for each of us, un-diminished by our sin, personal failures, general unworthiness, etc... This book was written late in his life, just a few years before his death. It appears to me to be the most unapologetic, unvarnished, and downright honest book on faith/God/grace that I have ever read. In the forward Phillip Yancey encourages readers to read some of Manning's other works in order to get a full measure of the man, since in this book he appears to share more of his dark side/dark struggles than his light. Dark it may be, but it is also a beautiful story of restoration, written with the brutal and unbridled honesty that likely only becomes possible near the end of a life filled with struggle. You'll find astounding triumphs and victories, human and divine. And colossal failures. Powerful forward marches, and stagnant painful regression. And through it all Brennan Manning invites us to see the power and persistence of a grace greater than our triumph and sufficient for all our failures. Read this book. You'll be glad you did.
