Review

"The tragedy of typical history instruction is not just that we forget it, but that it is so forgettable. Mike Maxwell's thoughtful prescription: Principles drawn from history that speak to today and tomorrow."   -David Perkins, Professor Emeritus, Harvard Graduate School of EducationMike Maxwell's book contains copious wisdom and provides food for thought for history teachers everywhere. It is impossible not to be stimulated by its provocative insights about how the history classroom can prepare us for the future. You may not agree with everything in this book. But one thing's for sure: You will not be bored by it."   -Sam Wineburg, Director of the History Education Group, Stanford Graduate School of Education"As someone who has spent over forty years teaching history and training history teachers, I have read much on the topic of history education, and Maxwell's book is one of the best. Maxwell wants to identify what makes history a useful subject and discuss the urgent need to teach it well. History teachers searching for a higher purpose for all their hard work should take a look at Maxwell's book; I give it the highest recommendation."   Jim Smith, author of Ideas That Shape a Nation and former New Mexico Teacher of the Year."Not for nothing are we known as the United States of Amnesia. This book makes a great case for bringing the study of history back to the center of our educational system--and offers valuable suggestions on how best to teach history's lessons.   -Stephen Kinzer, former foreign correspondent for the New York Times, author of histories including Overthrow, All the Shah's Men, and The Brothers

From the Author

My two books about history education complement each other. Future-Focused History Teaching reports findings from cognitive science that call for teachers to emphasize the most important knowledge in a school discipline so as to produce learning useful in the future. The Student's Friend Concise World History implements this suggestion by focusing on the most important concepts and developments of world history and by limiting superficial detail that can interfere with effective understanding. Website: studentsfriend.com.    What are the angel and the devil doing on the front cover of Future-Focused History Teaching? This Mexican folk art represents two sides of human nature, which is the chief source of principles of historical knowledge.Â

If you've ever looked around your history class and thought to yourself, "Man, I have got to make this more interesting," but you weren't really sure how, this is the right book for you. The book begins by establishing the ways in which we disparage history class in comparison to other subjects, and goes on to explain why history is such a challenging subject to make sense of for students. The caution is that we tend to shrink history into a disconnected, meaningless string of names and dates, with little applicability to the future. Maxwell argues that the reason history class doesn't "stick" is that it fails to supply principles for future learning; that this is how history is different from other core subjects. The book delves thoroughly into problems with world history, American history, and AP courses, and begins to connect historical events into the four needed threads for history teaching to be successful: a timeline, narrative exposition, principles of historical learning, and connections to general principles. The idea is that we can take a general principle of history, trace it through numerous supporting events, and use that general principle to hypothesize the outcome of future events with similar characteristics.I loved this book, because teaching history this way fits into the way my brain works exactly. I need a "big idea" to hang things from, and the general principles do just that. I believe this book has the potential to make history much more meaningful for students. Technically, I am giving this book 4.5 stars rather than five, thinking about how others might use this book.Maxwell makes it very clear that the way we are currently teaching history is problematic, and offers a solution. However, comparatively speaking, there is much more time spent on the problem than on the solution. This works for me, because I really like that the solution is given, but not step-by-step spelled out. It is left up to the reader to figure out how this approach can work in their classroom. I realize that there is an audience who would prefer to have more specific information as to how to implement this program. I like to get the big idea, and figure out the steps to get there for myself. I suspect that the author may also be this kind of teacher as well, because that is certainly how this book is laid out.TL;DR: A great resource for history teachers who don't want to be boring but don't need a step-by-step manual.

We need to overhaul History teaching if future generations are to think wisely about History, claims Mike Maxwell. Mike Citing data, Maxwell shows how funding for today's American schools has been determined by testing- with the subject of History getting the short end of the stick. Maxwell claims that American schools' efforts to improve their testing scores in English, Math, and Science, have left funding for History teaching and the training History teachers as a low priority. The current trend of teaching history does not develop students' understanding of World Events and trends. Instead students are merely memorizing "trivia" of meaningless dates and times which serves them in the short run to pass History tests, but in the long run isn't serving to really educate them to make important decisions- and is destroying their actual curiosity to learn. The solution, according to Maxwell, is Future-Focused History teaching. Future-Focused means students' inquiry has a place in their learning, and they are taught a concise view of relevant events, and given a framework that is more intelligible to them- so that they can grapple with the true principals of History, and not be caught up in the details.Teachers who want to rethink their teaching approach should check out this book!

Mike Maxwell, thank you for giving us what we need: a no-nonsense masterpiece about the current state of history education. You get it, and as a world history teacher it was a refreshing book to read! History exists to impart wisdom and to give our youth the tools they need to become more enlightened, more knowledgeable, and wiser citizens. If we fail to define and teach what is important in history, we risk paddling further down the disturbing river of byzantine standards, quasi-history classes (like the Big History Project which is more about natural history), Common Core obsessed literacy-focused "history", racing through history too fast, or omitting history entirely because educators fail to understand its worth. Please buy this book and consider Maxwell's ideas.

Maxwell does a great job of explaining how traditional textbooks and standardized tests have harmed history education. He also has great ideas for how this harm can be repaired. If you teach history, you owe it to yourself (and to your students) to read this book.

As a family of definitely non-history professionals, this book was eye-opening. Thinking back to history presentation in all levels of education -- from elementary school to college years -- it was as the author described, a litany of dates, places, who won, who lost, and so on. How much more students could learn -- and learn to think -- about HOW those events of the past can shape our understanding of the now and the future. The concepts of the book have stayed with us and often come up in conversation now. It is hoped it does so for those who are actively engaged in presenting history to current and future students.
