I would think this review makes the tenth review with a FIVE star rating and there's a very good reason for that... Mr. Vaughn's book is fantastic!!! I don't know Richard personally but I know of him from his sensitivity and contributions to the various online diabetic websites that we both belong to. I was so engrossed in the book the other night that my wife asked, "well, what do you think?" and I think my response to her will make the most glowing testimonial as I explained that the author writes in a very concise and conversational tone. I briefly reviewed the book to my wife as "I feel as though the author is writing an email directly to me."At first I thought Richard's lessons would not have meaning to me. I mean, Richard is a Type I and I'm a Type II. Richard takes insulin and has a pump. I am not even on meds at this time. But there are many lessons in the book but above and beyond that, the title "Beating the Odds" is appropriate. Richard's book features periods of sadness and periods of humor but throughout the book consistent periods of love and support and respect from his family and to his family. This book is truly inspirational, motivational and educational.I have no reservations in recommending this worthwhile book to the diabetic and to their supporters. Richard is proof of success in life, diabetes, as a friend, as a family member, and as a remarkable person. This is a "must read" in my opinion.
As an endocrinologist, I encourage people to think of themselves as a person with diabetes, and not as a diabetic. Richard chronicles his life starting as a sickly 6 year old boy learning that he has diabetes and describes how he combined his dreams and goals and desires with the disciple required to manage his diabetes. He describes many of his major decisions and how some of his decisions were influenced by diabetes and how many of his challenges had nothing at all to do with diabetes. He created a successful balanced life which included relationships, family, career, education, spirituality, and his sense of community. As Richard matured from a 6 year old boy to a husband, father, and math professor, his determination to do whatever he had to do to be successful was also used to control his diabetes. As he evolved, so did the treatment of diabetes and it is clear how improving management of diabetes led to improvement in his life. He not only beat the odds in terms of survival with minimal complications, he became an exceptional human being doing everything possible to help others. His love for family, friends, and compassion for anybody needing help shows in his actions, decisions, and feelings. Anybody with a child with type I diabetes, a person with type I or type II Diabetes, or an interest in learning how people overcome challenges will find this book both informational and inspiring. I would love to have Richard in my office helping me inspire my patients to become all they are capable of being.
Beating the Odds - 64 Years of Diabetes Health by Richard Vaughn is a well written and inspirational account of thriving with the struggles of type 1 diabetes before the times of home glucose monitoring and carb counting. Mr. Vaughn's story is positive and stresses a few key themes that can be incorporated into any type 1 diabetes life to help it be more manageable. The story shows how a families hard work and determination influences a sons acceptance of diabetes and a good work ethic. It also shows that people with diabetes have struggles yeat can and do thrive with proper guidance and determination. He stresses the virtue of having a "can-do attitude" portrayed by his determination and completion of college and advanced studies even though his parents may have wished he stay back for health concerns. This is a refreshing account living a quality life with type 1 diabetes. I encourage anyone struggling to have empathy with diabetes or to find inspiration to make tame to read this inspiring story that stresses time tested themes such as family values of hard work and clean living with a positive attitude. Than you Richard!
Richard is a great author and shares his personal story of managing his T1 diabetes and all that has changed since he was diagnosed. Great read for anyone who has or has a loved one with diabetes.
Way to go Richard! As a type 1 for 48 years myself it is great to read about others who are living productive, relatively healthy lives. I appreciated Richard's love for his family, what his well meaning mother tried to do, and his always positive attitude - for that I believe is the key. I would have liked more technical information and am glad for the references included at the end. Thank you Richard for sharing with the world your vast knowledge. You are to be commended.
Great read. Gives hope to so many with t1.
Richard Vaughn has survived 64 years with Type 1 diabetes---something which may not seem so remarkable to those who have only known of diabetes in the late 20th/early 21st centuries. Beyond his own interesting revelation of his life and how it was shaped and challenged by diabetes, it was FASCINATING to hear first hand how primitive the tools were for ascertaining the amount of excess sugars, the crudeness of the tools, the complete lack of awareness of the disease, even among phsicians putting themselves forward as experts.Richard has made a huge, personal contribution to our understanding of how far we've come in managing diabetes. His health today, his positive outlook, his ability to adapt to new strategies should give us all great hope for more and better solutions---and look toward the cure we all know is possible!
