In 1969, I was a Cubs fan living in New York, watching in horror as the Mets caught fire down the stretch to win the Eastern Division of the National League by 8 games. To this day, I still can’t believe it.What happened? Too many day games in Wrigley Field? Bad breaks, like Satch Davidson’s “safe” call of Tommie Agee at Shea Stadium on September 8? The black cat? Lack of outfield depth? Poor roster management? Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins provides behind the scenes details and offers unique insight into that magical season. He shares not only his perspective of events, but also those of his teammates, the sportswriters who covered the Cubs, and the fans. The 1969 Cubs will forever remain a special team with a remarkable, unbreakable bond with their fansMany baseball experts believe had Durocher rested his players more and utilized his entire roster, the Cubs could not have been beaten. Jenkins comes down hard on manager Leo Durocher. I tend to agree. 1969 was the first year of divisional baseball. The Eastern division consisted of six teams. To make postseason play, the Cubs had to beat out five other teams. One team, the Montreal Expos, was in their first expansion year. They lost 110 games. The Philadelphia Phillies lost 99 games in 1969. The Cubs had only three legitimate teams to beat, the Mets, Pirates, and Cardinals. And with four future Hall of Famers on their 1969 roster they couldn’t get it done. In addition, Durocher failed to lead the talented Cubbies to the postseason in 1970, 1971, 1972, or 1973.Nothing could erase the psychological scars inflicted on us Cubs fans, but Fergie Jenkins’ stories bring back wonderful memories.Several typos and a lack of proofreading/editing are the only things keeping me from a 5-star review. That’s a minor complaint. The book is well worth reading and enjoying.

Even knowing the ending of how the 1969 season ended this was very interesting. Great insights from HOF Fergie Jenkins about his teammates, manager, various games, and what the ups and downs of that magical season. Being too young to really remember that season, I enjoyed learning more about it and the legendary members of that team. All Cubs fans will enjoy this as well as those who enjoy the history of baseball.
