The Gambia is a popular tourist destination where many birders see their first tropical African birds. This small and accessible country shelters many migrants from the Western Palearctic from September to April, in addition to its resident West African birds. This field guide is very useful although it does not have distribution maps. The region covered is so small that most species may occur throughout it in appropriate habitat. There is a nice introduction which gives you an overview of habitats of the region. The birds are presented in 48 plates of similar or related species. This presentation is not overwhelming as there are usually a dozen or fewer species per plate. The very informative text, which pertains to each species, must be consulted after you have found the particular species of interest on a plate or by consulting the index, if you know the English or scientific name of the bird. The text suffers from being distanced from the picture of the bird but is well worth reading as it usually presents additional information pertaining to identification as well as details on habits, voice, status and distribution and breeding.

As far as I can tell, a nearly complete guide to the birds of Senegal. Using it I was able to identify most of the birds I photographed on a trip to Senegal, so for me it was great.It has color illustrations, descriptive text, and a comprehensive index.Users wishing a less expensive option should consider Birds of Western Africa: Second edition (Princeton Field Guides).

As an avid birder living in Senegal, I had seen a guide to birds of Senegal and Gambia in the hands of a local ornithologist and fell in love. Unfortunately I hadn't counted on there being two distinct Helm guides to birds of Senegal and Gambia. The Borrow and Demey guide is MUCH better - way more pictures, all species pictured (some are not pictured in this guide), three times as many color plates, and a great deal more pictures of females and immatures to assist with identification. Birds in this guide are crammed into only 48 plates and sometimes drawn somewhat amateurishly. I'll have to pawn this one off on an unsuspecting friend. :)

I live in Senegal and this is a fabulous book for someone who is living in Senegal or the Gambia. I travel some and have been using the Princeton Illustrated Checklist for Birds of Western & Central Africa - but it is nice to have a more limited list of birds that actually live here. (Makes it easier to identify them!) The illustrations are clear and I appreciated the raptors perched and in flight illustrations. What I also have enjoyed is the detailed info. about each bird in the back of the book - mating habits, flight patterns, breeding, etc. so that I really can learn more about the bird than just its name.

The format of this book is sub standard to the field guides we are used to in South Africa i.e. Newmans and Sasol.I could not review the layout of the pages prior to purchasing and was disappointed to find that the outdated plate system was used. Plate layouts work for leisure review but NOT a field guide where all info needs to be on the fingertips and distribution maps being one critical element.

The authors and illustrators do a wonderful job on a field guide of the birds of two countries that are not visited very often by birders. Clive Barlow lives in The Gambia and has been the moving force behind the creation of birding conservation efforts in that country. He is the acknowledged living expert of birds of Western Africa. He is also a first-rate field birder. Shortly after the book was published in 1998, my son and I had occasion to visit both Senegal and The Gambia. In Banjul we were most fortunate to meet Clive Barlow and go birding with him for four days. He is one of those rare individuals who has both wonderful identification skills combined with the uncanny ability to locate hard-to-find birds. His obvious love for birds is clearly evident in his handy field guide.The book is well organized and very tastefully presented. The illustrations are superbly drawn and handy maps let you see the bird's expected range. Mr. Barlow is at his peak in the birds of The Gambia and only slightly less knowledgeable about Senegalese birding--perhaps because The Gambia is generally a much better place to observe birds.The book is one of my favorite field guides. It is, of course, a must for anyone birding in those two countries or neighboring regions. I wish every area of the world were covered by a guide of this quality. Its creators are to be commended for a very solid, readable, useful and enjoyable field guide.

The Gambia and Senegal are packed with a myriad of beautiful, unusual and easily watched bird, a number of which migrate to europe in our summers. I'm so glad that we had this field guide when we visited espeically as we were staying in the mangroves at Makasutu Wildlife forest reserve. We made good use of it, marking all the many birds we spotted, often while we were just having breakfast sitting by the river. An excellent resource.

David F. Chang, MD is a summa cum laude graduate of Harvard College and earned his MD at Harvard Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Francisco where he is now a clinical professor. Dr. Chang is chairman of the cataract program sub-committee for the AAO Annual Meeting. He organized, and was the program co-chair for the first three AAO “Spotlight on Cataracts” symposia. He is the 2003 recipient of the AAO Annual Meeting Secretariat award. Dr. Chang is a member of the AAO Ophthalmic Knowledge Base Panel for Cataract and Anterior Segment, which is developing the American Board of Ophthalmology knowledge base for the MOC examination. He is on the scientific advisory board for the UCSF Collaborative Vision Research Group, American Medical Optics, Calhoun Vision, Medennium, and Visiogen, and is the medical monitor for the Visiogen Synchrony accommodating IOL FDA monitored trial. I feel like a traitor writing this review because I'm huge fan of Ben Katchor's work. This book is series of non sequiturs that never turned into a coherent work of fiction. In the first 30 pages I thought there might be some hope of an interesting idea emerging. But by page 50, out of a hundred pages, I had given up hope. When I got to the end there was nothing positive I could say about the experience. I think Katchor's forte is brief snippets revealing the mystery of urban reality. In this longer work, staged in post-colonial America, Katchor seems out of his element. Some might presume that perhaps I don't understand the social and political milieu of this era. Such is not the case and I still found this narrative indecipherable. I understood the significance of the isolated incidents and characters but it never solidified into a meaningful narrative. But I do understand the fine line between mysterious and indecipherable. Perhaps others won't have my difficulty.The author did bring up many idiosyncratic and strange moments in American history. But I had little sense of what was tweaked reality and what was pure invention. In small doses that can be quite mysterious, but at some point the author has to give clues as to his intent. I love his Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer. I think Katchor is one of America's most intriguing cartoonists and comic book writers. He just couldn't pull this one off.

Ridiculous book that had me cracking up at the first page. If you like Katchor, then this will delight you. If you're unfamilar with him, then this may get you interested in his other work. Especially effective if you are 'of the faith'.

All of Ben Katchor's work is incredible and a joy to read and look at. This book, the Julius Knipl books, Cheap Novelties, etc are no exceptions. But this book, and like, everything else that Katchor is involved with.

The Jew of New York, a graphic novel set in the 1830s (a period where results of the Enlightenment were newly evident), is IMO a vision of the crisis of Jewish identity in the modern world. It is equal to the work of humorists such as I B Singer, Steve Stern, and Nathan Englander, as well as the great graphic artist Wil Eisner (A Contract with God, Wil Eisner’s New York).Katchor weaves together various stories of Jews involved in entertainment, the preparation of food and drink, the importation of buttons and beaver pelts, and a scheme to found a utopian community of Jews and native Americans, the lost 10 tribes of Israel. Well, first of all, I have to say I'm really surprised by the people who don't like this book. Certainly I don't expect it to be universally loved, but I really disagree with the reasons I've read below. For example, one reviewer criticized it by calling it a "book of ideas." Yes, exactly! And not your run-of-the-mill ideas either. I found it very inventive, original, thought-provoking, and culturally/historically accurate. That's a lot to pull off in less than 100 pages--pages that are largely taken up by drawings. Pictures do say 1,000 words. Second, I completely disagree with the reviewer who noted that you have to know something about Jewish stereotypes. I'm a black African female living in 21st century America, and I had no difficulty understanding the stereotypes or warped values behind them. Maybe it would be safer to say that you need to understand or have been exposed to some type of stereotype in your lifetime. But I have to think that most people who would even pick up this sort of book, would be literate enough to know that the stereotypes depicted, are exactly that. I even disagree that the page layouts were difficult to read. I think if you have ever read sequential art, it's pretty straight-forward. And if you haven't, the process of figuring it out--and it really does become intuitive very quickly--adds to the telling. You *do* find the significance of certain details by kind of puzzling over the images and layout. So I guess if you need hand-holding narratives, then this probably isn't the book for you. But this is the first work by Katchor that I've read, and I am very impressed by his ability to say so much in so few words about capitalism, nature conservancy, race relations, religiosity, sexuality, theatre, etc. and how these things comprise /conflict with "progress" and the belief every age has that it is the epitomy of advanced human development.I first heard of Katchtor when reading The Narrative Corpse, a story told by 69 artists and edited by Art Spiegelman. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people who had a negative reaction to it, had similar comments as can be found here. That the "story," as such, wasn't linear, etc. But again, I feel like those readers really missed the point. Anyway, I'll save that review for that book, but if you're not so hung up on context, The Narrative Corpse is another that you might enjoy, though the two books couldn't be more dissimilar.

This book was really helpful on a recent trip to Korea. I would really recommend it as a quick reference for the language to anyone travelling there or wanting to learn Koean.

This is a very good book to have on you if you are going to be visiting Korea or just want to learn a few phrases.

This book has some useful phrases, but has some glaring omissions that are surprising.For example, the book provides both the hangel and romanized versions of the phrases in the book. It also has a small section on the Korean alphabet, but while it provides the romanized equivalents it doesn't have the actual hangel characters (what all written Korean is written in). For example, it states that "s" is a letter used in Korean, but it doesn't say that the hangel character for "s" is "ã……".It could also be a bit better at explaining when the phrases are best used. With honorifics in Korean it'd be helpful to be more clear on if a statement is formal or casually written. Some phrases are also probably not the most commonly used in everyday colloquialism.Even with its flaws it's still a useful reference for quickly getting a starting point on which phrases to be used as a tourist or if you need something in a pinch. There are probably better references however.

this is not a good phrasebook to take if you are actually traveling to korea! it may have hangul (korean characters) with the phrase/word translations, but this book does NOT teach hangul at all! the intro only tells you what hangul is and shows you all the sounds they make without showing the characters that make the sounds.this book does have the basics, vocabulary, and some grammar points at least. i would recommend this book only as another tool for studying korean. especially if you already know the korean alphabet!

As far as phrasebooks go this is a superior effort. It has the right balance of basic grammar, essential travel phrases, and culture notes to get one going without being intimidated by the Korean language. Particularly useful was the section on counting which has different forms depending upon what is being counted. All words and phases are given in romanized form as well as in Korean script. The booklet concludes with a short but handy vocabulary list. What is missing is a pronunciation guide for the Korean alphabet. While the author does furnish a table indicating how Korean vowels are pronounced, it is presented in romanized form with no accompanying Korean script. This is unfortunate because it is relatively easy to follow Korean pronunciation when reading from written Korean. Despite this flaw, this is one of the better phrasebooks available.

This book is RIDDLED with errors and phases that you will never hear EVER! Give any Korean a red pen and this book and half the book will be crossed out. And there is so many phases that are correct grammatically but only written and never spoken. Worst ever.

Very lucidly written, reflecting the authors thorough understanding of how the details of Oedipus's story stand for and illuminate the deeper reaches of human nature.

The superlative reviews from publications as disparate as the New York Times, the New Yorker and Hellenic World (!)should be sufficient inducement to convince anyone with the least interest in Sophocles and "Oedipus Tyrannus" to buy this book.Bernard Knox is perhaps the greatest living classicist and he may just be one of the greatest of all time. He writes with an ease and lucidity that renders the most difficult subject available to the lay reader. He has an uncanny facility to sum up in a paragraph a subject that has occupied him for twenty or thirty pages. Indeed one of the delights of this book is that at the end of each section there appears a wonderfully pithy summation.When this book was first published it (surprisingly) received immediate and positive reviews from the New York Times and the New Yorker. But it was almost universally ignored by the classical community who were perhaps annoyed at the twitting they received in Knox's introduction. Dismayed by the appearance of an article entitled "The Carrot in Classical Antiquity", Knox had lashed out at the "excessive technicality" of his colleagues. This will remind many of us of Victor Davis Hanson's brilliantly polemical attack on the classical establishment in "Who Killed Homer".Time, however, was on Knox' side and he went, on, as I said, to become a giant in his field. In 1998, "Oedipus at Thebes" was republished for a new and grateful generation of students.This is a true tour de force. Knox took as his starting point a statement made by Walter Headlam. Headlam had claimed that "when embarking on the elucidation of a Greek text, the scholar should first learn the text by heart and the read the whole of Greek literature looking for parallel passages." Sounds almost preposterous. Right? Well Knox actually did this. The result is a reading of "Oedipus Tyrannus" that is not only breath-taking in its magisterial sweep, but which, as far as I am concerned offers the first coherent explanation of what the play is about (but see also Charles Segal's sensitive reading - "Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge"). Knox has lovingly burnished Sophocles somewhat tarnished reputation and has ensured that Oedipus Tyrannus takes its place in the pantheon of the greatest works of literature.But Knox is also careful to point out the relevance of the play for modern readers -- yet another reminder (and it is despairing that we need them) that the classics should be taught in our schools and read by all of us. Here is Knox on the subject: "A play, however, which suggests that, for all its great achievements, human ingenuity may be fatally flawed, does not seem irrelevant for an age that lives in dread of atomic and biological warfare, not to mention the nightmare possibilities offered by the latest developments in genetics."The reason I read this little book is that I had started to read Sophocles' plays in the Chicago collection, "The Complete Greek Tragedies", edited by Grene and Lattimore. I became immediately bogged down in "Oedipus Tyrannus" and I began to suspect he had more to do with the translation than anything else.The dust jacket of this collection contains superlatives about Grene's translations. We are gushingly told at one point that the Greekless reader needs "no other translation." Well allow me to politely differ. As I read Knox's book, using it as a tool to annotate Grene's translation, I came to see that time and again Grene had, for what could only be poetic purposes, obscured the true meaning of the text. In so doing he presents a version of the play that is VERY far from what Sophocles must have intended.So, for those of you about to embark at University (or at home) on a study of Sophocles let me suggest two things. 1. Buy Knox and read him FIRST. 2. Buy Fagles' translation of Sophocles and not Grene (it is anything but unpoetic as has been suggested elsewhere). You won't be disappointed. I think you will emerge with far more respect for Sophocles and Greek society in general.
